There wasn’t any doubt she wouldn’t, but Phoebe Waller-Bridge sure brought the laughs as she made her debut as a guest host on Saturday Night Live.
The Fleabag star was everything we’d fallen in love with as she took the helm of the US comedy show on Saturday, delivering a rip-roaring opening monologue.
She kicked things off with jokes about the perceived similarities fans have between her and her character in the BBC Three series.
“People often assume I am like the character Fleabag because I wrote it – sexually depraved, foul-mouthed and dangerous – and I always have to say to them, ‘Yes, you’re absolutely right’,” she joked.
“In fact, everything I write has a degree of truth and every project is different.
“I’m not a sex addict because I wrote Fleabag – but I did write Killing Eve because I’m a psychopath.
“And my most exciting ex boyfriend wrote nothing, but was both.”
She added: “It’s a great time to be a psychopath right now – they’re really having a moment, don’t you think?”
Phoebe then attempted to ration why Fleabag fans had fallen so hard in love with Andrew Scott’s character, who has become affectionately known as Hot Priest.
“I call the character Priest in the script, but everyone started calling him Hot Priest. Obviously Andrew is hot, but this character caused such a horn storm,” she said.
“Andrew and I were trying to figure out what it was about him that was driving women so mental. We boiled it down and realised it was he was doing this one thing...
“Listening.
“Really, really listening. Try it, guys,” she added.
And referring to Fleabag’s triple win at last month’s Emmys, Phoebe said: “Back in the day, horny women were to be feared – and now they’re given Emmys.”
Elsewhere on the show, Phoebe also appeared in a parody of Love Island – a sketch that was 100% our type on paper.
