Pictures Of The Day: Frozen Romanian Prisoners And Lip-Shaped Urinals

Snow and ice dominates pictures from Japan, as visitors to the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival in Chitose admire the coloured lights in the frozen spectacles.

The 17-day-long ice festival began on 27 January and attracted thousands of wrapped-up tourists last year.

Pictures showing local inmates at a snowed in stray dog shelter in Glina offer an insight into the freezing climes in Romania at the moment.

Inmates from Jilava prison were mobilised, in temperatures below minus 15C to clear the snow after the shelter was snowed in following blizzards at the end of last week.

Temperatures plunged to minus 27C in parts of Romania and four people died because of the cold according to local media.

Shivering meerkats huddle in Thailand after heavy rain and highlighting the plight of less fortunate animals are two animal cruelty campaigners holding a tiger skin coat and a snow leopard robe.
