The hotly-anticipated PlayStation 4 is expected to be unveiled on Wednesday.

Electronics giant Sony is holding an event in New York, during which it promised to reveal "the future".

The launch will be broadcast live online from 6PM Eastern Standard Time - about 11pm in the UK.

But the games manufacturer has refused to confirm widespread rumours that the latest version of the console will be launched.

Leaked photographs which have emerged online appear to show a prototype controller with a touchpad alongside the classic DualShock-style controls have fuelled the speculation.

It is thought the new PlayStation should hit retailers in the US and Japan in November, possibly with a delayed launch in Europe.

The unveiling will excite millions of computer games fans across the world, and further fuel the on-going battle between Sony, Xbox 360 manufacturers Microsoft and Nintendo, the makers of the Wii and Wii U.

Since the first PlayStation console launched in December 1994, Sony have sold over 310 million home consoles worldwide, and 2.9 billion games.

What we expect to see:

  • MCV are pretty certain that we'll get a look at both the new hardware, controller and user interface of the new machine.
  • After Sony's purchase of streaming games service GaiKai, the PlayStation 4 is widely expected to come with some kind of similar surface. Current rumours suggest this could be restricted, at least initially, to PlayStation 3 games.
  • Games set to be unveiled should include KillZone 4, a new Gran Turismo game, and third-party titles like Star Wars 1313 and Watch Dogs. Games Revolution named Uncharted 4 and Resistance 4 as other key potential launch titles.
