Prime Minister Theresa May has insisted she has never had a main role model.

The first woman occupant of 10 Downing Street since Margaret Thatcher said she had been inspired by a range of people who got things done.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly on ITV's Good Morning Britain after an awards ceremony for inspirational women, Mrs May said: "I'm never somebody who has had a single role model. I think I'm inspired by people who get on and do the job.

"I think it's important for everybody to do the best they can - that's what my parents told me. I heard the story the other day, somebody said to me their six-year-old daughter had said to her 'Mummy, I didn't know a girl could be a prime minister.'

"Hey, let's hope there are girls out there today who are saying 'These are examples of what I can go on to do'."

Kelly told the PM: "It's great to see a woman in Number 10."
