Police investigating the deaths of two men at a theatre have arrested a man. Trevor Grills, singer with popular shanty group Fisherman's Friends, was killed when he was struck by a large stage door at the G Live concert venue in Guildford, Surrey, on February 9 last year, hours before his group was due to perform.
The band's promoter, Paul McMullen, from the Stockport area, also died at the scene of the incident, suffering fatal leg injuries. Mr Grills, 54, was treated for head injuries at St George's Hospital, Tooting, south London, but was pronounced dead two days later. Surrey Police said a 55-year-old man from the Bridgnorth area of Shropshire was arrested today on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence and is in custody.
The singers are from the picturesque Cornish fishing village of Port Isaac, where they performed for years before being talent-spotted. The band's success has seen them secure a top 10 album and a spot on the pyramid stage at 2011's Glastonbury festival, and advertise seafood on television commercials. Mr Grills, who was one of the younger members of the ensemble, was well-known for taking the lead vocal role on some of the group's more melancholic numbers.
