PRESS ASSOCIATION -- Scotland Yard has asked the Home Secretary to ban the English Defence League from marching through the capital for 30 days.

Theresa May will decide whether to ban the march, which would pass through five London boroughs including Tower Hamlets in east London, after receiving the request from Acting Commissioner Tim Godwin.

The move comes amid fears of violence and disorder if the march is allowed to go ahead.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We are in the process of applying to the Home Secretary for authority to prohibit a march in five London boroughs for a period of 30 days."

The Home Office added that Mrs May "will carefully consider any application from the Commissioner to ban marches, according to the relevant legal tests".
