Police holding a man suspected of stabbing a pregnant woman multiple times in the street have been granted an extra 12 hours to question him.
A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken into custody after a woman was stabbed in Sutton Coldfield on Friday afternoon, the Press Association reported.
The baby girl is doing well although her mother remains in a critical but stable condition, West Midlands Police said.
In a statement on Saturday afternoon the force said officers would be able to continue questioning the man until the early hours of Sunday morning.
The 40-year-old woman was stabbed in the busy town centre by a 41-year-old man that was known to her, and was said to have screamed "not the baby" as the incident unfolded about 3.15pm.

Two men suffered hand injuries after stepping in to save the woman, and subdue her attacker, police said. The men, who were among five good samaritans to intervene, suffered minor hand injuries and received medical treatment, West Midlands Police said.
Witnesses said they heard men shouting "drop it" as the stabbing occurred.
The woman - who has not been named - was taken from the scene by an air ambulance around 4pm.
Chief Inspector Julian Harper said the victim and her attacker are "believed known to each other so this was what we call a domestic-related situation".
He said: "As such no other members of the public should be alarmed and should be reassured that we have what we believe is the only person involved in this incident."
Harper said the investigation could become a murder probe if the mother does not pull through, but added: "Obviously our wishes are with her and we hope that she will recover."
He said initially one male intervened and then four younger males also came to help
"I would certainly like to give a big thanks to those individuals who have got involved, those members of the public who have dived into a volatile situation with complete disregard for their own safety and their actions should be commended," Harper said.
