There are only a small number of certainties in football today - each game will consist of two halves, at some point a ball will be kicked and Andy Carroll will pick up an injury at least once a season.
But as well as these, you can be sure that each team will sign a player at one stage or another who just simply fails to perform. He may not adapt to the side's style of play, he may not get enough time on the field or he may inexplicably lose all footballing ability, what's known as doing a Torres.
Here are five players who can relate to this and need to leave their current clubs as soon as possible if they hope to shine again.
5. Lewis Holtby
When Lewis Holtby joined Spurs in 2013, fans of the North London club and football in general were excited to see the young prospect in the Premier League.
However, he failed to shine and left for Fulham on loan just a year later.
He was exciting for Fulham, but failed to keep them in the Premier League. However, that was through no fault of his own, as even the best players could not have prevented the inevitable.
Holtby is now 23 and is quickly running out of time to make the step up and live up to expectations.
He isn't exactly the most prolific of midfielders, but he managed 14 goals in 24 appearances for the Germany Under-21 side and could have played for England.
If Holtby were to leave Tottenham for good, he could become a star for a mid table side, as Spurs are unfortunately signing players who will feature ahead of the German.
He possesses the potential, but needs to leave if he is to shine.
4. Wilfried Zaha
Wilfried Zaha is another player with unbelievable potential, but is being held back by his club.
When he joined Manchester United from Crystal Palace, it seemed like he may finally make the step up to the big time. However, he has never been given enough playing time at United and spent the last two seasons on loan at Palace and Cardiff respectively.
Due to Manchester United's size and financial strength, it seems unlikely that Zaha will ever force his way into the squad, as the pressure on the managers after Sir Alex Ferguson means that they are after instant success.
Zaha could be a fantastic asset for a side outside the top six and even England, having already won himself two caps for the Three Lions.
However, if he remains at the Red Devils he could soon be forgotten or spend his prime years jumping from club to club on loan, where he will fail to be the player he could be.
3. Micah Richards
Micah Richards is often referred to as one of the League's best young right-backs and has been for years. However, at 26 it now seems that Richards is fast running out of time to be the player we all hoped.
He has been a Manchester City player since 2001, but only joined the senior side in 2005. He was an integral member of the team before the arrival of Pablo Zabaleta and a number of injuries struck, but is now linked with a move away from Manchester at every opportunity.
He has featured for England on 13 occasions and was widely thought of as the younger, more able replacement for Glen Johnson.
He was the youngest player to ever be called up to the England side and was regarded by former U21s boss Stuart Pearce as the best his side had to offer.
Richards has to leave City now to be in with any chance of first team football and a place in the England squad.
2. Edin Dzeko
Edin Dzeko may be a surprise inclusion on this list as he does perform, but bear with me.
Dzeko is a proven goalscorer and has a magnificent goals to games ratio - scoring a goal just over every two games throughout his career.
What makes a statistic like that even more impressive is the fact that he has been a substitute for most of his Manchester City career.
Unfortunately for Dzeko, City have the funds to buy the best strikers around and he is now behind the likes of Sergio Aguero, Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo in the pecking order.
If the Bosnian international were to move away from the Citizens now, he could still be a top striker for another Premier League side. In fact, there is no reason why he couldn't challenge for the Golden Boot if he were given sufficient playing time.
Edin Dzeko is one of the most clinical forwards in the league at the moment, but his talent is being wasted on the bench.
1. Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres tops this list for obvious reasons. In fact, he was inspiration for the list in the first place.
Formerly one of the most feared forwards in the Premier League, maybe even the world, Fernando Torres could score whenever or however you wanted.
He bagged 81 goals in 142 appearances for Liverpool and it seemed that Chelsea would have the last laugh when they signed the Spaniard for £50 million. Unfortunately for the Blues and Torres, however, it was everyone else who were laughing.
Torres has been simply diabolical for Chelsea, managing only 45 goals in over 170 games. He has missed chances your Nan could bury and has a look of despair and underlying sadness on his face, week in, week out.
If Fernando Torres is to be remembered as a great goalscorer (which does seem unlikely today), he must leave Chelsea as soon as he possibly can and to be honest, he will probably be given a gentle push towards the door anyway.
