So Radio 1's Big Weekend, Glasgow 2014, is almost upon us. Nearly two years in the planning and everything is very well poised.
Last week, Radio 1's Academy took place at the QMU in Glasgow - it was flooded with young people from the surrounding communities getting advice, encouragement and hopefully some inspiration from the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Emeli Sande, Fearne Cotton and Rita Ora - and also some knuckling down with some serious 'hands on' practical advice.
The main concert activity is just under two days away with a staggering line-up of world class UK and International artists. Some of the hottest new talent too - due to perform on the BBC Introducing Stage! This Friday, 23 May, sees the weekend kick-started with a huge party in George Square with 14,000 young people, and the biggest clubbing DJ's in the world - Tiesto, Martin Garrix, plus Radio 1's very own Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Danny Howard.
The final show preparations for the George Square event are almost complete, suffice to say it will simply take everyone's breath away. Saturday and Sunday will then see Radio 1 descend onto Glasgow Green with Coldplay, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, One Direction, Lily Allen, Rita Ora, Kasabian, Jake Bugg and many more. The list just goes on and on.
But it's more than just the glitz of major artists. Radio 1's Big Weekend is unique. All of the tickets are free, for nearly 70,000 people and the content from all of the stages stretches across BBC platforms, all weekend and beyond. So, what does it do for the City? Well, having delivered the previous 13 Radio 1's Big Weekends, I can tell you that past form suggests a major economic boost to the host city through hotels, tourism and general city entertainment. Then the legacy once we have gone - Radio 1 celebrates young people and it celebrates Scottish new musical talent through BBC Introducing. We also shine a huge BBC spotlight on all that's great about such a vibrant city.
The summer ahead for Radio 1 is an exciting one with Glastonbury, T-In The Park, Reading and Leeds and our very own shows in the autumn, with Radio 1's Teen Awards and 1Xtra Live. But if the activity this weekend is anything to go by, this will be our best year ever!
