Never has an April Fool's prank split and united a community, like the Reddit button.
What began as a some what harmless social experiment three months ago to test our restraint has now been humbled to a Reddit archive with a simple message thanking the one million plus participants who couldn't resist pressing the grey dot on their screens.
Last month the seemingly immortal button revealed its failings as the counter suddenly hit zero sending Reddit (and the world at large) into a panic over why the button had stopped working.
For one user estifu, the button's glitch was the 'best thing that ever happened to him' as he told himself that he would propose to his girlfriend of one year if the counter hit zero.

In case his bride to be was reading he clarified that 'the button both was and was not the deciding factor for what led me to ask.'
During its short life the button divided Redditors into pressers and non-pressers by assigning colour labels to each user and people suddenly found their identity in being colour coded grey -- a non-presser.
Creating an entire community around the button might seem odd but for Reddit it was just business as usual.
Given the strict instructions that the unassuming circle could only be hit once, Redditors were soon selling 'unclicked accounts' just to keep the counter going.
r/thebutton, managed to attract over 185,000 subscribers, inspire marriages while dividing and uniting the world all at the same time.
RIP button.
