The Revenant stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy will go head to head at this year's 36th London Critics' Circle Film Awards.

DiCaprio, 41, is nominated for best actor for his role in the gritty western drama, which is hotly tipped for Academy Award success next month.

Hardy, 38, is also up for the award for his portrayal of the Kray twins in Legend, as well as being nominated for best supporting actor for The Revenant, and best British actor.

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara will battle it out for the best actress prize after starring together in romantic drama Carol, which is leading the way with seven nominations.

A host of Oscar nominees are up for awards including Broadchurch's Charlotte Rampling, Brie Larson and Kate Winslet.

The documentary Amy, which depicts the troubled life of the late singer Amy Winehouse, is nominated for three awards - best film, documentary and British film.

Organisers have said this year's British categories have been extended to include Irish talent, with Colin Farrell, Michael Fassbender and Saoirse Ronan among the nominees.

Sir Kenneth Branagh will receive the evening's top accolade when he is presented with the Dilys Powell Award for excellence in film.

Previous winners have included Miranda Richardson, Gary Oldman, Dame Judi Dench, Julie Walters and Sir Michael Caine.

The awards at London's May Fair Hotel are voted for by 140 members of the Critics' Circle Film Section.
