Ricky Gervais has called for celebrities to be snubbed in the New Year Honour’s List this year, in place of those who helped out in the current crisis.
In 2020, Ricky has been even more critical of the rich and famous than usual, in particular the way that they have reacted during the coronavirus pandemic.
And in a new interview with Australian radio presenter Christian O’Connell, the After Life creator has doubled down on his opinion, claiming that celebrities should not be considered for honours by the royals this year.
Praising frontline workers, he explained: “I never want anyone to complain about the NHS again, or nurses or doctors or anyone on the front line.
“We’ve got to remember we clapped for them and that should always be there.”
He then turned his attention to celebrities, stating: “The New Year’s Honours list should not go to celebrities this year. It should go to those people.
“Give it to someone who gave a kidney to a stranger, not someone who invented a new type of mascara. I’ve seen people given a knighthood for services to fashion. What are you talking about, services to fashion?
“Christ, it’s not that hard. People are finding cures for cancer and AIDS.”
In April, Ricky called out celebrities who have been complaining about the stresses of lockdown from their luxurious homes.
He said: “I see someone complaining about being in a mansion with a swimming pool. And, you know, honestly, I just don’t want to hear it.”
The former Office star had specific ire for the group of celebrities who came together to record a cover of Imagine, organised by Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot.
“You can see in their eye – ‘I could cry at the beauty of my personality, I’m just so beautiful for doing this’ and everyone sees that - we get it,” he fumed.
