Ricky Ponting's highly decorated one-day career appears to be nearing an end after Australia dropped their ex-Test and ODI captain for the next two Commonwealth Bank Series matches against Sri Lanka and India.

The Tasmanian, who skippered the Aussies to World Cup glory in 2003 and 2007, has hit just 18 runs from five innings, and national selector John Inverarity cited that woeful form for his demotion.

Inverarity said in a statement: "Ricky Ponting has been dropped from the squad due to his lack of form in the five Commonwealth Bank Series matches to date in this series.

"The team will not seem the same without him, but moving on from the omission of players who have been outstanding over a long period of time is the nature of elite sport," he added.

Ponting has played in 375 one-day internationals for his country, scoring 13,704 runs at an average of 42. He has hit 30 centuries and 82 half-centuries.

The 37-year-old's omission comes just a day after he led his nation once more, chosen on an interim basis in the absence of his successor Michael Clarke.
