Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines, a song branded "disgusting" and "rapey", has been banned by a university student union in an unprecedented move to banish "lad culture".

The number one track, which features lyrics such as "I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two", has been blacklisted by Edinburgh University's student association (EUSA), and barred from being played in any of its buildings.

The decision forms part of the EUSA's new campaign "against myths and stereotypes around sexual violence".

The "end rape culture and lad banter on campus" policy was introduced in March due to a "significant proportion of students and the wider population hold dangerous victim-blaming views about women who experience rape and sexual violence". The EUSA's website adds: "These views are regularly expressed in our learning and social environments on campus, often without challenge from even from academic staff."

In a recent interview with GQ, Robin Thicke explained the reasoning behind his controversial lyrics: "We tried to do everything that was taboo. Bestiality, drug injections, and everything that is completely derogatory towards women. Because all three of us are happily married with children, we were like, 'We're the perfect guys to make fun of this.'

"People say, 'Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?' I'm like, 'Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before. I've always respected women'."

EUSA vice president Kirsty Haigh said: "Blurred lines promotes worrying messages around sex and consent - consent has no blurred lines.

"Other views must be challenged and not only in academic environments but in our social settings too. Unless we are willing to tackle concerning comments and behaviours in our social lives we will never be able to change this culture. "
