Romeo And Juliet: Baz Luhrmann Vs Julian Fellowes

Romeo And Juliet: Baz Luhrmann Vs Julian Fellowes
|

17 years after Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet first hit our screens, Julian Fellowes (aka the man behind Downton Abbey) has created a brand new version of Shakespeare's most famous play.

With the film's release date only weeks away, all eyes are on the new Romeo Douglas Booth, and Juliet, Hailee Steinfeld. And the inevitable question is, will this remake be as good as Baz Luhrmann's?

Before the Fellowes version is unveiled, here's how Douglas and Hailee compare with the brilliant Leo and Claire...

1. Juliet

Steinfeld's Juliet is Shakespearean. Danes' version isn't. Hailee wears gold and velvet, Claire wears feathered angel wings. You can guess which one most girls will prefer (angel wings, obvs) but both look beautiful.

2. Romeo

Douglas Booth - we salute you. Not many boys would be brave enough to follow in the footsteps of actual Leonardo DiCaprio in his dreamiest era. Both Romeos have floppy hair, great eyebrows and although Booth doesn't get to dress up as a knight in shining armour, he does look good in a lace-up shirt. You've kind of got respect a man brave enough to take on a lace-up shirt.

3. That ball scene

The most romantic moment in film history and Luhrmann's depiction of it was epic. Yes - Steinfeld's swirling silver mask is amazing, but nothing will ever beat Leo (the knight) kissing Claire (the angel's) hand at the Montague and Capulet ball.

4. The kiss

There's a lot of kissing in this story. Steinfeld and Booth get to smooch next to a tree entwined in roses. Lovely. Danes and Dicaprio get passionate in a pool. Steamy. Why doesn't that happen in films anymore? Remember Cruel Intentions? And what about real life? We'd freakin' love a pool kiss, dammit.

5. Tybalt

Look! Chuck Bass has replaced John Leguizamo as Tybalt. And he's got a sword!

So - do the films look similar? No. Will Baz Luhrmann's version still hold its title as the best adaptation, ever? Probably. After all - what could be better than the aquarium scene!

Romeo and Juliet will hit screens on 11 October. Here's a preview of what's in store...
