Cyclists in London's Crouch End were baffled when they discovered a roundabout had been given new arrows directing traffic the wrong way.
Haringey Council said it had asked its contractors to return to repaint the arrows on the roundabout in Stapleton Hall Road , the right way this time, at their own expense.
It was ridiculed by cycling campaigners on Twitter, where people joked the campaign to improve cycling in London by ‘going Dutch’ was being taken too literally by the council.
Haringey Council asked its contractors to re-paint the arrows, the right way round this time
The council told The Evening Standard: "This mistake by our contractors Ringway Jacobs will be rectified as soon as possible at their expense. Temporary action has been taken at the roundabout to avoid confusion.”
A spokesman for the London Cycling Campaign also told The Standard: "While this roundabout mistake is somewhat embarrassing, at least it's a temporary one.
“What's most frustrating for the large number of people who ride bicycles in Haringey is that so many local streets and main roads are not safe or inviting for cycling.
“Our Space for Cycling campaign is urging every local election candidate in Haringey to support specific measures to improve cycling for everyone in every ward."
HuffPostUK asked the council for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.
