Pregnant Kate Middleton has told friends she thinks she is having a girl – because she can't stop eating sweets.

The Duchess of Cambridge has been craving chocolate biscuits and sticky fruit loaves baked near her Norfolk home, Amner Hall.

And according to an old wives' tale, that's a sure sign she is carrying a Kate, 33, has been joking to pals that her craving for sweets could mean she's expecting a girl.

A source told the Mail on Sunday: "Prince William has always had a sweet tooth, but Kate has really had sweet cravings during this pregnancy.

"She could barely keep anything down in the first months of her pregnancy but recently she just cannot get enough of naughty treats."

The royal couple have been spotted shopping at the the Humble Pie bakery in Burnham Market, North Norfolk where Kate bought the £7.25 Wicked Chocolate Biscuit Cake and the £5.95 sticky fruit loaf during a recent shopping trip.

In other royal baby news, punters have staked a significant amount on the Kate and William naming their second baby Alice - leaving one bookmaker facing a potential five-figure payout. The odds on the royal couple calling their baby Alice have tumbled with bookmaker William Hill from 14-1 to 4-1 after the bets were made last week.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: "Alice is the new favourite and we have seen a significant number of bets, particularly from the Tunbridge area - you have to think there is good reason for the gamble."

If the wagers prove correct the bookmakers face losing a five-figure sum.

After Alice the next fancied moniker among punters is the Queen's name Elizabeth at odds of 9-2 followed by Charlotte 11-2, Victoria 12-1, Alexandra 14-1, Diana 16- 1, and the boys names Arthur, Henry and James all at 20-1.
