At last the Royal announcement that many had been anticipating has been made - and for many it brings back memories of 30 years ago when Prince William was born.
Although the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have not been as quick off the mark as William's parents - it took just 100 days from their July 1981 wedding for Prince Charles and Princess Diana to announce they were expecting - there will be many comparisions made with their predecessors.

The Prince and Princess of Wales made their announcement on 5 November, just a couple of hours before they attended a banquet at the Guildhall in London, given by the Lord Mayor of London. Indeed, it was the Lady Mayoress who was the first person to publicly congratulate the Princess.
For that occasion, Princess Diana was wearing an outfit that she had worn two weeks previously for an engagement in Angelesey, which is now home to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

After the Lord Mayor had spoken about their 'spectacular wedding' he added how their union had now been "supremely hallmarked" with the news that they were to be "blessed with a child" to warm applause from the banquet's guests.
Like Kate, Diana suffered from morning sickness, although this and the news that she also suffered from bulimia was not disclosed until many years later.
When Prince William was born on 21 June 1982, Alistair Burnett announced the news on ITN's News at 10 with the words: "It's a boy!" He added Prince Charles had been present at the birth, that mother and baby were doing fine and that the as-yet unnamed William "cried lustily".
