A young man killed in an apparent hit-and-run in the early hours of this morning has been named as rugby player Ben Regan.

Police are still searching for the driver of a light coloured car who failed to stop after knocking Mr Regan over in Reigate, Surrey.

Dorking rugby club said Mr Regan played for their under-21s team, and his death will "touch" everyone at the club.

In a statement on their website, the club said: "It is with great sadness that we pass on the terrible news that U21 (under 21) player Ben Regan was tragically knocked down and killed last night in Reigate.

"Our hearts and thoughts are with his dad, Jim, and his family. Ben was a lifelong DRFC (Dorking Rugby Football Club) player and his death will touch the whole DRFC family."

Mr Regan died at the scene at around 2.45am today, Surrey Police said.

They said he was struck by a grey or light-coloured car near a bar in Bell Street at about 2am.

Detective Sergeant Gary Wright said: "This was a tragic incident where a young man has sadly lost his life and our thoughts are with the victim's family and friends at this devastating time.

"The vehicle involved in this collision will have sustained a lot of damage and I urge anyone who has information on this car or the driver to contact Surrey Police as a matter of urgency."
