A Russian passenger plane has vanished from radar with 44 people on board.
The Sukhoi SuperJet 100 went missing in West Java at around 2.33pm local time on Wednesday, Bloomberg reported.
The plane has been missing long enough for any fuel on board to have been spent. Shortly before disappearing from radio contact, the crew asked for permission to descend, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency quoted an Indonesian aviation official as saying.
The aircraft was given permission to descend from an altitude of 10,000 feet down to 6,000.
According to RT, hijacking and a high-altitude crash into a mountain have not been ruled out.
A search effort is underway.
