A woman who died after being stabbed has been named by police as 41 year-old Sarah Gosling.

A 52-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody. Gosling and the man knew each other, according to Northumbria Police.

Police said they received a report of an injured woman in a house in Tewkesbury Road, in the Lemington area of Newcastle, at 8pm yesterday.

Officers and paramedics attended the scene and the woman was taken to hospital, where she died.

A post-mortem examination found that Ms Gosling died of a single stab wound to the chest.

Detective Chief Inspector Christina Barrett said: "I would ask anyone who has any information to contact police.

"Local officers are out and about in the area, and I would like to reassure people that the victim and arrested man were known to each other."

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
