Here are Scar-Jo's four rules when it comes to make up and FYI -she prefers to do her own unless it's for a swanky red carpet event.

"It's all about balance, and that doesn't necessarily mean you have to choose one thing over the other" Scarlett tells Elle magazine in an interview for its December issue.

"Sometimes it's nice just to be minimal and be fresh, and other times you can wear a red dress and red lipstick and it looks great."

For achieving that sexy, smouldering smoky eye look:

"Use your brushes dry if you want colour to be softer. Or wet your brushes if you want defined colour. I go through periods where I like to apply everything with a brush-the trick is to make sure they are really clean."

On lipstick:

"Some people put a colour corrector around the lips if their lipstick bleeds. If you really want to go for it, rim the lips with a highlighter. That's very dramatic."

Keeping it it au naturel:

"I'm not particularly high maintenance. Day to day, I like to wear some sort of tinted moisturiser, mascara, and maybe a bronzer."

On that dramatic look for her debut as the face of Dolce & Gabbana:

"I had fiery hair, and we did a red lip with a smoky eye. I think it was the first time I was like, 'Is this too much?' But I realised that a strong lip and a strong eye don't have to be mutually exclusive."

As for getting made up last minute before some sparkly soiree (we've all been there)?

"I take off my concealer under the eye, a little around my nose, and refresh those areas with new foundation" she says. "I always carry a red lipstick, you never know when you'll need it."
