Two men have been found dead in Manchester city centre – with one falling from the fifth floor of a Grade II listed hotel and the other found in a room within the same hotel.

Greater Manchester Police said they were called to Portland Street shortly after 5.30am on Wednesday following reports that a man had fallen from a building.

The man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers gained entry to a room in the Britannia Hotel and found another man, who also died at the scene. His death is being treated as suspicious, and officers are currently working to establish the identity of this man and contact his next of kin.

Police say the man fell from a fifth-floor window in a communal landing area of the hotel, before the second man was found in a first-floor bedroom.

A forensic tent was put up at the back of the hotel on Silver Street, which remains closed. Pictures from the scene show shards of broken glass on the ground below the top-floor window and a net curtain fluttering in the wind.

Detective Chief Inspector Amber Waywell, of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team, said: “We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this incident and a scene remains in place on Silver Street.

“The investigation is still in its early stages but we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“I would urge anyone with information that could assist our investigation to please get in touch as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting reference number 261 of 26/09/18, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
