Flat-packed furniture is fine, but what about something a bit more organic - say a chair that actually grows itself. And then packs itself up again.
Noumenon designer Carl de Smet has managed to create almost exactly that, with his line of shape-memory polymer chairs.
From its flat 'melted' shape - 5% of the volume of the final chair - the funiture is popped into life by the application of heat.
Currently the chairs construct themselves at 70 degrees C, but the team is already working on a version that works at 35C - vastly reducing the amount of energy needed to 'build' them.
