These pictures show a man being given seven lashes in Indonesia after being found guilty of gambling, punishable by whipping under the region’s strict sharia.

Dozens of people turned up to watch the beating in the highly conservative country, which took place after Friday’s prayers, reported AP.

Four men were sentenced to the punishment after being found playing dominoes for money in a local cafe.

One man was too ill to be caned, according to the chief of the police in the state capital, Jantho.

Although Indonesia has a secular legal system, Aceh province adheres to a version of sharia, the moral code and religious law of Islam.

The region has been the subject of international reports before, with the state’s public whipping policy coming under fire from Amnesty International.

The charity has repeatedly called on Indonesia to ban caning as it violates the UN convention on human rights

Aceh residents can be caned for adultery, consuming alcohol, drinking or selling food during the fasting month and being together with an unmarried member of the opposite sex.

Those that commit adultery can be stoned to death, and those having homosexual sex can be whipped 100 times.

According to Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International’s director for the Asia-Pacific, the stoning penalty has not been applied in Aceh and is condemned by the local, national and international community.
