A woman has been jailed for six and a half years for scarring an epilepsy sufferer with a hot iron in a "nasty example of bullying and humiliation".

Sharon Lyndsay, 31, stubbed out a lit cigarette on the eyes and face of her victim, and pulled down his trousers and boxer shorts and then systematically burnt the top of his thighs and groin with a hot iron while he "screamed for mercy".

She claimed Philip Sheehy made unwanted sexual advances to her on a night out in Blackpool but Preston Crown Court heard she happily invited him back to a house where the assault took place.

Mr Sheehy, 41, had visited the Lancashire resort from his home in Rochdale to stay with friends.

He met Lyndsay while out drinking and they later went to the home of co-defendant Adam Marsden.

In an unprovoked attack Marsden, 27, began the violence when he punched Mr Sheehy in the head and then climbed on top of him to ram a pen in his ear.

Lyndsay then took over before she stole £180 from the victim's pockets at the address in Reads Avenue on 15 May.

Mr Sheehy refused to go to police for fear of reprisals but his mother stepped in and reported the matter.

The court heard he experienced severe pain for a number of days, has problems with sleeping and the trauma has worsened his epilepsy.

Fortunately he suffered no lasting damage to his eardrum but was embarrassed to wear shorts in public because of the marks left by the attack.

Marsden pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

He had a lengthy record of violence and was serving a suspended sentence for battery imposed three weeks before the incident.

He was jailed for 20 months and received an additional three months in activating his suspended term.

Lyndsay, of Tyrone Avenue, Blackpool, had a history of committing burglaries, theft and dishonesty.

Both expressed their remorse in court for Mr Sheehy.

Addressing Lyndsay, who cried in the dock, the Recorder of Preston, Judge Anthony Russell, said: "This was a nasty example of bullying and humiliation of someone who was overwhelmed because he was intoxicated and outnumbered.

"It was a sustained and repeated assault of a vulnerable victim."

Lyndsay received a six-month concurrent sentence for theft which she also admitted.

Following sentencing, Detective Constable Warren Jones of Blackpool CID said: "This was a particularly disturbing attack on a vulnerable man. The victim has been left with physical and emotional scars from his ordeal.

"The sentences given to these two reflect their horrendous actions. Thankfully our communities will be safer for some time now that these two are behind bars."

Lyndsay pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to causing grievous bodily with intent.
