A sick dad burst into tears when he read his seven-year-old daughter's letter to Santa. For it had one wish written on it: that he gets better.

Six months ago, Brett Wooding, 41, from Dagenham, Essex, was diagnosed with the deadly lung disease emphysema.

Doctors told him he needs to lose weight to prevent the chronic condition getting worse or he may need an oxygen machine to help him breathe.

His condition has so touched his daughter Skye that she wrote to Santa asking for his help to cure her dad.

Skye wrote: "Dear Santa, I want for Christmas for my dad to get healthy and to lose weight and to get well. Please help my daddy."

Beneath her appeal, Skye drew a picture of her father in between two hearts. Brett – also father to sons Aiden, 18, and Tyler, nine – burst into tears when he read it.

He said: "I thought it would be a list of items to get her for Christmas. I didn't know what to say to her, it just broke my heart."

What made Skye's note all the more touching, was that he thought she hadn't grasped how ill he was. Now Brett has vowed to pull out all the stops to get better.

Skye's letter has echoes of the note 10-year-old Ronnie Harris wrote to Santa last week, saying he'd be the 'happiest boy in the whole world' if Father Christmas could make his father Russell Harris, 32, better, as he battles with a brain tumour.
