Six people have been arrested by police investigating the murder of a man stabbed in a street attack.

The 29-year-old victim died in hospital after the attack in Wellfield Road in the Bentilee area of Stoke-on-Trent in the early hours of this morning.

A 23-year-old man and women aged 16, 20, 21 and 29, all from the Stoke-on-Trent or North Staffordshire area, have been arrested in connection with the death and a murder inquiry launched, Staffordshire Police said. A sixth person, a 24-year-old man from North Staffordshire, was arrested by detectives on Sunday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

Chief Inspector Mark Dean said: "Specially-trained family liaison officers are offering support to the man's family following their tragic loss.

"Local officers are in the community today to offer reassurance to residents as we carry out necessary inquiries at the scene."

The area is currently sealed off and being examined by scenes of crime officers.

Although a post-mortem examination has yet to be carried out, police said they are treating his death as murder.

Police were called to the scene of the attack at 12.45am. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire but died a short time later.
