When a six-year-old Michigan boy woke with a craving for Chinese food at 6am on Sunday morning, he knew just how to go and source some – by DRIVING down to the takeaway.

The unnamed youngster sneaked out of his family home, and got behind the wheel of his dad's Ford Taurus station wagon and made it down to the fast food restaurant – only to find it closed.

As his fruitless quest for a Chinese continued, other drivers in Lapeer, Michigan, phoned the police after seeing the vehicle swerving down the highway.

The little driver was eventually boxed in by other motorists who took the car keys from him and stayed with him until the Lapeer County sheriff's deputy arrived.

The boy told the police that after hitting a traffic sign he was heading to the repair shop to get the car's cracked bumper fixed, admitting he had originally set out to get more of the Chinese food his family had eaten the previous night.

"I don't know how he was able to operate everything and see at the same time," Deputy Karl Sapp told the Detroit Free Press. "Apparently he was close enough that he could reach the pedals and accelerate and brake too."

Deputy Sapp told reporters the boy had never been taught to drive a car, and said that he didn't know how he had been able to work out how to make it three miles from home.

The police raced to the child's house to inform his parents of his whereabouts. Officers said the boy's dad was fast asleep and totally clueless about his son's escapades.
