It seems ‘you’re not you when you’re hungry’ – or when you’re taking aim at an entire nation.
Snickers has come under fire for suggesting the Welsh language resembles the gobbledegook of someone leaning on a keyboard.
On Tuesday the official Twitter account for Snickers UK tweeted: “A place in Wales or someone sat on a keyboard? A thread.”
In a now-deleted thread, they went on to list place names in Wales, such as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll and Rhosllanerchrugog.
While some Welsh Twitter users stood by the brand, saying Snickers was only “making a joke”, hundreds of others have tweeted their anger.
“People [are] saying it’s ‘just banter’ after Snickers mocked the Welsh language. If they did that with any other language, it would be ‘discrimination’. So what’s so different here then?” Twitter user Tanwen Cox asked.
Another commenter, Hwyling Morgan, added: “I’m Welsh. You have insulted my language, my culture and my people. The way you people think and act disgusts me. We will spread this wide across the internet. You are a disgrace!”
Other Welsh speakers are threatening to boycott the bar, which is owned by US company, Mars, Incorporated.
“As a Welsh person who liked your Snicker bars I will not be buying your product again. As a large organisation and employer you have a duty to comply to a standard of ethics. But you chose to ignore that (for a laugh at someone else’s expense),” Twitter user Dave Jones said.
Snickers has since deleted the thread and apologised for the original tweet, telling followers: “We are wholeheartedly thankful for our Welsh fans in the UK and all over the world.”
