Sony Xperia Z2: Waterproof, 5.2-Inch 'LiveColour LED' Smartphone Unveiled

Sony has unveiled the Xperia Z2, its next flagship smartphone.

The 5.2-inch, 1080p device features an improved 20.7-megapizels camera, a refined design and a new "SteadyShot" video shooting mode.

The device also includes an improved display, using what Sony said was a "world first" new 'LiveColour LED' technology.

The announcement was made at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Other key details about the new device include:

  • 5.2-inch 1080p display
  • 'LiveColour LED' tech producing a wider range of colours
  • Built-in noise cancelling with included headset
  • 20.7-megapixels 1/2.3-type Exmor RS camera
  • 4K video shooting
  • 2.3 Ghz Snapdragon 801 processor
  • 3GB Ram
  • 3,200 mAH battery
  • 8.2mm thin

Sony added that other new details in the device included new image editing features, such as "Timeshift" video with editable slow-motion controls, and a new "Background Defocus" filter.

It also emphasised that the Xperia Z2 would come with a selection of Sony's entertainment content, including six Hollywood movies and 30 days free access to Sony's Music Unlimited service.

"With Xperia Z2 we have taken our premium Z series to the next level, delivering unique experiences that only Sony can offer," said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications, in a press release.

The announcement came alongside that of the new Xperia Z2 Tablet and the midrange Xperia M2.
