The results are in - Sony pretty much kicked Microsoft's arse in the Christmas console wars.

Shoppers snapped up 530,000 PS4s compared to 364,000 Xbox Ones - despite Sony's offering entering the market a week later.

In monetary terms, that's £144.5 million of Xbox ones and £181.6 million of PS4s, according to GfK Chart-track.

Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) director general Kim Bayley said: "Games continues to deliver digital sales strongly, but it was disappointing that Xbox One and PS4 came so late in 2013 and then huge demand meant stock sold out quickly."

Even Microsoft executives have praised Sony for their console launch.

Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer told Official Xbox Magazine: "When I think about their announcement, their clear focus on a customer, leading with the value proposition of what they're trying to do, staying true to a vision, I think they've done a nice job in how they defined the PS4."

Sony also scored another win as the PS4 version of FIFA 14 topped the individual format chart.

UK video game sales last year were up 6.6% on 2012. The biggest seller of the year was GTA V which sold a whopping 3.67 million copies.
