Spencer Matthews has spoken about the steroid use that saw him thrown out of last year’s ‘I’m A Celebrity’.

Just three days after entering the ‘I’m A Celeb’ jungle, Spencer disclosed to show bosses that he was using a steroid-based medication, and was asked to leave the series.

He’s now spoken for the first time about his use of the drug, admitting that he did it “too look good in the shower” on the show.

Opening up to BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, he explained: “I wasn't thinking properly and made a mistake. I took some pills to enhance my training.

“It was quite a costly mistake in the end because the pills travelled with me to Australia and when I spoke of them I was asked to leave. It was completely out of vanity. I just wanted to look good in the shower."

After leaving the show, various reports suggested that Spencer had gone to rehab - rumours which he has only now broken his silence on.

Spencer claimed that the rehab reports weren’t true, and in fact he was in Tanzinia building a school, after the “dark time” he faced once he was asked to leave ‘I’m A Celebrity’.

He confessed: “I wanted to selflessly do something for other people and give back because I was in a bit of a muddled place.

"When the reality came in that I was going home on the third day, I was just absolutely devastated. For someone that doesn't get anxious or depressed, I felt pretty anxious and depressed.”

Spencer was a late addition to ‘I’m A Celebrity’, entering the jungle with fellow reality TV graduates Ferne McCann and Vicky Pattison, both of whom went on to make it to the final, along with Union J singer George Shelley.
