'Spider-Man' Star Tobey Maguire Interviews His Replacement Andrew Garfield

Spider-Man Face Off For Interview

Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire has interviewed his replacement Andrew Garfield for a VMan magazine piece.

Maguire played the web-slinging superhero in three movies but eventually walked away from the franchise to be replaced by actor Garfield, who takes on the title role in new blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man.

During the chat for VMan magazine, the former Spider-Man reveals he followed developments closely as movie bosses searched for a new star to play the beloved superhero and his alter-ego Peter Parker, and he was delighted when they chose Garfield.

Maguire tells Garfield: "When (the new film) was coming together, I was particularly excited at two moments: one was when (director) Marc Webb got involved. I think he's an interesting and cool choice. And then I was certainly curious as to who was going to play Peter Parker. When I heard it was you, I was literally like, f**king perfect!... I just want it to be great, and I thought, What a great actor Andrew is, I'm glad that's what's happening here."

Maguire goes on to ask Garfield about the audition process, and the Never Let Me Go star reveals he had dinner with friend and rival Jamie Bell the night they both auditioned for the role.

He says: "I actually had dinner with Jamie the night of my screen test and his screen test. We compared notes and war stories, and we kind of got past the ridiculousness of it all and thought it would be a nice idea to get everyone together and kind of interview each other about how messed up the process is, being against each other, and remember that we're all in it together, knowing that when you take off that bodysuit someone else is going to be stepping into your sweat immediately after. It's a weird kind of cattle call."

Maguire also warns Garfield to expect an overnight boost in his celebrity status as soon as the movie hits cinemas: "All of a sudden, the Sunday after it was released, I remember I went to lunch with my little brothers and there were all these people outside and photographers... But for you, you seem to be more prepared for it than I was. Hopefully it won't be as violent for you from one day to the next."
