Political leaders are being urged to support a campaign for wider recognition of St Andrew's Day as a national celebration.
Dennis Canavan, a former MSP whose Bill to have a national holiday on or around November 30 was adopted at the Scottish Parliament, wants to give the day a higher profile.
Backed by Independent MSP Margo MacDonald, he wants parties to sign a statement which reads: "We support the St Andrew's Day Campaign Committee in their efforts to increase the celebration of St Andrew's Day, including wider recognition of a holiday on or around November 30 so that St Andrew's Day really becomes a day of national celebration for the people of Scotland."
Mr Canavan said: "It is now over four years since the Scottish Parliament, with all-party support, approved my Bill to have a national holiday on or around St Andrew's Day, but much more needs to be done to get fuller recognition of the holiday."
He is also backed by groups such as the STUC and Saltire Society, as well as figures including Cardinal Keith O'Brien and comedian Elaine C Smith.
