Star Wars: The Force Awakens has overtaken Spectre to become the UK's biggest film of 2015.

The sci-fi blockbuster has made £94.1 million since opening at cinemas on December 17, according to new figures from Disney.

Bond film Spectre has currently taken £93.5 million.

The Force Awakens is now the fourth highest-grossing film in UK history, after adjusting for inflation.

Titanic tops the list with a total box office to date of £111.3 million, followed by Skyfall (£107.8 million) and Avatar (£105.6 million).

But given the speed with which The Force Awakens has rocketed up the chart, it is likely to become the UK's highest-grossing film in a matter of days.

There are now three Star Wars entries in the UK's top 20 biggest films - The Force Awakens (fourth place), The Phantom Menace (11th) and the original Star Wars (17th).

Figures for the largest UK box offices in history are compiled by the British Film Institute (BFI), but do not include movies dating from before 1975, as comparable figures are not available.

The film with the all-time biggest box office in the UK is believed to be Gone With The Wind, which is estimated by the BFI to have made more than £2 billion since its release in 1940.
