Last month, 1D fans the world over were heartbroken to learn that Zayn Malik had quit the band, to live the life of a “normal 22-year-old”, five years after the band first formed on ‘The X Factor’.

However, luckily for them, they’ve now been given a tiny glimmer of hope from none other than Stephen Hawking, who appeared at a physics conference in Sydney via hologram over the weekend.

He explained, via satellite from Cambridge University: “One day there may well be proof of multiple universes… and in that universe Zayn is still in One Direction.”

Earlier this year, the celebrated theoretical physicist was the subject of the biopic, ‘The Theory Of Everything’, which earned Eddie Redmayne his first ever Academy Award.

He also recently tried his hand at acting himself, when he appeared alongside Catherine Tate and David Walliams in a comedy sketch in aid of Comic Relief.

Despite Zayn’s shock departure, the remaining members of One Direction have remained insistent that they’ll be continuing as a four-piece, and will kick off the UK leg of their ‘On The Road Again’ tour in June.

On Monday, they also became the first act to be confirmed for this year’s Capital Summertime Ball, where they’ll be taking to the stage at Wembley Stadium as part of what has already been dubbed the “most insane line-up EVER”.
