Not only can Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard look forward to tonight's World Cup warm-up against Peru, he's also celebrating his 34th birthday.

The midfielder made his Liverpool debut more than 15 years ago, since when he has lifted the Champions League trophy, two FA Cups, three League Cups and one UEFA Cup. Tonight he will lead the England side out at Wembley for the final match on home soil before leaving for two further friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras in Miami ahead of their campaign in Brazil which kicks off with the Group D match against Italy on 14 June.

Meanwhile, Gerrard and coach Roy Hodgson have defended Wayne Rooney after the striker was criticised by former Manchester United team-mate Paul Scholes for being past his best.

"Paul Scholes is wrong," Gerrard said. "I think he's been Manchester United's best player at home and in Europe.

"He's been in terrific form. I can only judge from my opinion but from what I've seen from his performances in the United team, his form has been really positive."
