A baby was found safe and well and still strapped into her car seat after she was 'stolen' by a thief who nicked her mother's car.

Eight-month-old Genesis Hailey was in her car seat at a petrol station while her mum nipped inside to pay for fuel in Houston, Texas.

But an opportunistic thief struck – with the Genesis was inside – and took off, sparking a frantic search.

The car was found abandoned less than a mile away with its licence plates removed and a stroller and a baby blanket dumped on grass nearby.

But Genesis and her car seat were nowhere to be found.

Then mercifully, three hours later, a jogger heard crying coming from bushes near an apartment complex and when she went to investigate, she found Genesis still strapped into the seat.

Jogger Hong Nguyen, from Vietnam, was on holiday in Texas to visit relatives, and was running along the road.

Hong said: "'I see the baby moving in the car seat so I called 911. I stayed with the baby."

A helicopter and police with search dogs were combing a wooded area near where the car was found. The apartment complex was also being searched.

The baby was taken to hospital and examined by doctors around 8am.

She was unharmed apart from some ant bites. Police have released an appeal to find the thief.

He's described as a black male standing about five-foot-nine tall aged in his late teens or early 20s.
