A puppy has been reunited with its owners after being stolen from their home in Essex almost two weeks ago, thanks to a viral Facebook campaign.

Caramel, the four-month-old chihuahua cross, was abducted during a burglary on 3 June leaving her eight-year-old owner, Lexie Taylor, heartbroken.

Three days after the theft, Lexie's mum, Tracy, took to Facebook to search for the missing puppy, who was suffering a suspected tumour and was due to visit the vet shortly after she was taken.

The Find Caramel page quickly picked up pace and received over 15,000 likes within a week and reached over 13 million people on Facebook.

Sky News reported on Caramel's story and a woman who had recently bought a similar looking puppy for her family saw the story and came forward.

She arranged to meet with Richard Taylor, Lexie's father, and it was then they realised that the puppy was Caramel.

The family posted an emotional message on the Find Caramel page that said: "Lexie returned from school and could not believe her eyes. Both Lexie and Caramel have played together so much and are now snuggled up on the sofa at home where they belong. This is better than winning the lottery!

"You have truly restored our faith in human nature and we are so grateful to every single person who has shared, liked and spread our story. We are still in shock that Caramel is finally home," they added.

A video of Lexie being reunited with her beloved Caramel was posted on the Facebook page shortly after her return.
