Comedian Jon Richardson accidentally ate Massor dhal, which contained clarified butter ghee.

Sunday Brunch hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy had to apologise to guest Jon Richardson after serving up a non-vegan dish to the vegan comedian.

During Sunday’s edition of the Channel 4 show, chef Asma Khan cooked up a Massor dhal with prawns, which was then served for the guests to try.

Knowing Jon was vegan, Simon told him that the dish was OK to eat if he obviously avoided the prawns.

However, the dhal wasn’t actually vegan at all, as it contained ghee, which is a clarified butter.

Following a commercial break, Simon donned a pair of glasses to deliver a comedy apology, remarking: “Earlier on in the previous cooking item, I may have informed guests that the dhal was in fact vegan. It was, of course, ghee used in the recipe, which isn’t vegan. I allowed Jon Richardson, who is indeed a vegan, to eat some of it.

“On behalf of myself and the Sunday Brunch team, I would like to sincerely apologise and hope I haven’t offended you and spoiled your life.”

Jon joked: “When I’m sick during my interview, you can take responsibility for that.”

Showing off his own cooking credentials, Jon then noted that viewers could actually made the dish vegan at home.

“There’s no reason why you couldn’t use a vegan spread in it,” he said.

However, Jon faced some embarrassment when his wife Lucy Beaumont, who was also a guest, told Simon and Tim that he’d recently enjoyed a Halloumi burger.

While Jon obviously had a light-hearted response to the incident, Simon and Tim’s apology didn’t wash with everyone.

Sunday Brunch airs on Sundays from 9.30am on Channel 4.
