Up to 40% of supermarket customers were wasted during the first six months of the year, a new study has found.

In addition, more than a quarter of these customers were wasted at home. It is believed that this is largely due to the cheap alcohol on sale in supermarkets.

Stores have said that they will be dropping some promotions as a result of the findings, in a bid to help customers reduce the number of times they are wasted.

"Our aim is better self-control and less wastage," said a supermarket spokesman. "It was shocking to find that two-thirds of customers are regularly thrown out... of pubs."

Plans to undercut government prices with the sale of drunk tanks at a fraction of the normal £400 cost have also been shelved as a result of the study.
