A US-based scientist has confirmed that his team have successfully created a deadly version of the H1N1 virus which is able to evade the human immune system.
The research was led by Japanese scientist Yoshihiro Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and involved genetically engineering the current Swine Flu virus so that it could avoid the immune system.
The resulting virus is arguably the deadliest of its kind, rendering humans completely defenceless against it.
Kawaoka had originally kept much of his work under-wraps but has stated that his work is ready to be presented to the scientific community.
This isn't the first time Dr Kawaoka has been the centre of controversy after the virologist brought the deadly influenza virus back to life.
The Independent reports that unsurprisingly the reaction from some members of the scientific community has been that of horror.
One of the main concerns is that criminals would get hold of the strain and cause a potentially catastrophic loss of life by releasing it into the population.
