Tanya Houghton used to exchange postcards with her mother every time they went to exhibitions, or on holiday.

Now, three years after her mother Marianne was diagnosed terminal lung cancer, Tanya has started a project encouraging others to send her mother postcards from around the world.

"Me and my mum have always had this sweet tradition where we'd always exchange postcards wherever we went, whether it was a gallery, or an exhibition," the 26-year-old told the Huffington Post UK.

"She was diagnosed three years ago with terminal lung cancer and told she had six months to live. She's here three years later but the cancer's spread."

Marianne, who is currently in hospital after the cancer spread to her brain and doesn't yet know about the website her daughter has set up. The 54-year-old mother-of-two used to love travelling and after her diagnosis went on a Carribean cruise.

"She basically has the thirst for people and seeing the world and the amount of places she's been to is absolutely amazing. She's from Holland and she moved to the UK when she was like 20, and since then has always travelled about, she's been travelling by herself for the last year. She had all these places she wanted to go and see.

"She was on a Carribean cruise a few weeks before she got diagnosed with a brain tumour. She desperately wanted to go to Borneo and she really wanted to go to Thailand."

Now she's not well enough to travel, Tanya hopes the postcards, uploaded online on the 'I wish you were here' project's website, will let people go around the world with her.

Tanya said she wants to get as many postcards as "physically possible."

"It's been a tough ride, the last few weeks," she says. "It'll be so nice to have something from all over the world. I want as many as physically possible. I've been massively overwhelmed by the response the project has had. The feedback has been mind-blowing, breathtaking. What I'd love to do is get as many as physically possible. I'd love to collect them."
