Tesco are collecting food donations for families in need, as research reveals that more than half of British parents are worried about paying their household bills this summer.
The research by Censuswide also found that one in four parents have had to borrow money to make ends meet.
Chris Mould, chairman of food bank charity The Trussell Trust says:
"As school summer holidays approach, many of the UK's poorest parents are deeply concerned about being able to feed their children over the long break.
"During school holidays, food bank volunteers meet parents who have been skipping meals to feed their children, and mums who cry tears of relief when they receive a food parcel that means the whole family can eat that night."
In a bid to help struggling families Tesco are running a food collection this weekend (July 3 to July 5), and they have high hopes that it will be the biggest, most successful, food collection that the UK has ever seen.
This will be the third Neighbourhood Food Collection that Tesco has run since December 2012. To date they have collected a total of 10 million meals for people in need across the UK.
A record-breaking 4.3 million meals were collected during their last collection alone, in December 2013.
This year Tesco and it's food collection partners, The Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity FareShare, hope to beat that record by collecting at least five million meals.
Chris Bush, Tesco UK Managing Director said:
"It will be a real challenge to beat our existing record of 4.3 million meals donated in one collection, but I've been knocked out by the generosity our customers and colleagues have in the past, so I'm confident we can do it."
You can donate items of food such as long-life milk, cereal, tinned foods, tea, or coffee at your local Tesco from July 3 to July 5. Tesco will be topping up the amount of food donated by a further 30 per cent.
