You’re reading our series Summer’s Not Cancelled, where we celebrate summer in this new normal. From rediscovering nature and cherishing time with friends and family, to virtual festivals and unforgettable staycations – summer’s still here, it’s just different.
With travel abroad still limited, staycations are well and truly in vogue, with Brits flocking to the countryside for their summer holidays. But where should you go?
Airbnb has revealed the top trending UK destinations since bookings reopened, with the scenic village of Warton in Lancashire taking the top spot.
Depending on your view, the list of most popular locations may provide inspiration for your next UK break – or tell you where to avoid if you’re worried about the crowds.
The market town of Duns on the Scottish border was found to be the second most popular destination, while those craving the sea are booking breaks at Snettisham, Norfolk, which came in third place.
Fourth place was secured by Glastonbury in Somerset, while Rothbury in Northumberland came in fifth.
Airbnbs (and other hotels, B&Bs and campsites) have been permitted to reopen from July 4.
During the weekend before, (June 27-28), more than 70% of trips booked by Brits were domestic, according to Airbnb. Last week, daily domestic bookings on the site doubled just from Monday to Tuesday alone.
Almost half of domestic bookings made were for travel within the next month, Airbnb added, perhaps reflecting that many of us are desperate for a change of scenery after months of lockdown.
The majority (80%) of bookings made were between 50-300 miles of the holidaymaker’s home, the site said.
These are the 10 trending domestic destinations:
Warton, Lancashire
Duns, Scotland
Snettisham, Norfolk
Glastonbury, Somerset
Rothbury, Northumberland
Chapel Saint Leonards, Lincolnshire
Ross on Wye, Herefordshire
Leiston, Suffolk
Pickering, Yorkshire
Guildford, Surrey
“In the last week we’ve seen a significant spike in demand as travel becomes a reality again, with our trending destinations showing people are keen to explore the many interesting towns and rural areas the nation has to offer, providing a welcome boost to local businesses,” said an Airbnb spokesperson.
“The safety of guests and hosts is our key priority and we have introduced comprehensive guidelines for cleaning and home sanitisation to do our bit to help people travel with peace of mind.”
