With dozens of options, choosing an Easter egg guaranteed to impress is quite the task. To help, some intrepid taste-testers have put in the leg work for you.
The team at Good Housekeeping ranked 31 different eggs, shortlisted from 105, across categories such as milk chocolate, free from, dark chocolate, white chocolate and kids chocolate.
Following in the footsteps of The Booker prize and The Turner Prize, the judges decided that choosing just one winner was impossible – and instead, split it between three.
Best Overall Egg(s):
Asda’s Extra Special Free-From Dark Chocolate Egg with Vanilla Truffles, £5 for 200g
M&S’s Extra Thick Blonde and White Chocolate Egg, £12 for 500g
The Chocolate Libertine’s Honeycomb Beehive Egg with Honeycomb Nuggets, £69.99 for 1.05kg
The three eggs each received an impressive score of 80 out of 100, knocking the previous champion from artisan brand Booja-Booja off the top spot, ending its three-year winning streak.
The Asda egg is gluten-free and dairy-free and the tasters described it as “melt-in-the-mouth chocolate with hidden crunchy cocoa nibs”. M&S’s winning egg was praised for its “deeply creamy vanilla egg”, and tasters loved “the wow factor” of The Chocolate Libertine’s honeycomb treat.
If none of those eggs take your fancy, here are the other category winners:
