1. 1999 - Prince
Look, let's just get the obvious candidates out of the way quickly. We don't care how cheesy it is, 1999 is a New Year's Eve staple. If you're feeling particularly resentful of the track's ubiquity you could try to find a hipster cover version. Perhaps Zooey Deschanel or Lana Del Rey have reworked it or something.
2. Will 2K - Will Smith
Again, pretty much ubiquitous for a NYE playlist but worth it, if only for the line: "The new millennium, yo excuse me - WILLennium."
3. Dancing On My Own - Robyn
Summing up the bitter experience of watching your ex (who you are totally over) getting off with someone else at a party. Hey - New Year can sometimes be hideous, it's good to cater for all eventualities.
4. Magic - Ladyhawke
Like a more lyrically positive version of Dancing On My Own, the advantage of electro is that in party situations you can gloss over the lyrics and just enjoy the beat.
5. I'd Rather Dance With You - Kings of Convenience
A jaunty nod to the fact that having a conversation with a bangin' choon ravaging your eardrums is rather a pointless exercise: "The music's too loud / And the noise from the crowd / Increases the chance of misinterpretation / So let your hips do the talking." Quite.
6. Stomp - Steps
To be honest, anything from the Steps oeuvre is likely to be a good choice. If you play it once everyone's had a few drinks you will also find out who spent their teenaged evenings learning the dance routine. Flipcam at the ready...
7. Bad Romance - Lady Gaga
Without doubt one of THE best tunes to get your dance on in the last few years. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a DJ you could always try teasing your audience with a burst of "ra ra ra-ah-ah" during another song.
8. Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera
Symbolising the rebirth that new year supposedly brings, this song marked the return of Maroon 5 to the radio. Every five minutes. For months. It's a 2011 classic.
9. Your Disco Needs You - Kylie Minogue
Classic Kylie and outrageously good fun. You'll be glad of a few sparkles, a few feathers and lot of wild gesturing. FYI, that's Robbie Williams in the background.
10. I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
Sooner or later MyDaily parties always transition from "supercool fashion rave" to "slightly tired and emotional hen night in the town's only nightclub." This is one of the many tracks which will let you know that we have reached that point. At this juncture it's probably best to confiscate our copy of Ultimate Diva Classics and call us a taxi.
