The Dark Knight Rises has triumphed at cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic, rocketing to the top of the UK box office chart on the first weekend of its release.

The Batman trilogy's closing film debuted in top position in Britain after making £14.6 million in ticket sales, leaving its nearest rival - Ice Age: Continental Drift - in the shade with just £2.1 million.

The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader, raked in an estimated £100 million on its opening weekend in the US, although box office monitors declined to declare actual figures, following the Aurora shooting in Colorado.

There's been much talk of all the new characters introduced by director Christopher Nolan in his final Batman film - with stars Tom Hardy, John Gordon-Levitt and Anne Hathaway all coming on board.
