Disney has announced plans for a remake of ‘The Lion King’, and it’s fair to say fans are divided about it.
The company has revealed a “reimagining” of the classic 1994 animation is in the works, following the success of the ‘Jungle Book’ reboot earlier this year.
The new ‘Lion King’ film will be directed by Jon Favreau, who also headed up the live action remake of ‘The Jungle Book’, which proved to be a box office smash after it was released in April.
The news has split fans of the original film right down the middle, with some greatly anticipating seeing Simba and the gang again:
However, many others were worried about ruining such an iconic film that holds a special place in so many people’s hearts:
Disney have said the film has been “put on the fast track to production”, and have also assured fans it will include songs from the animated film.
Live action remakes of ‘101 Dalmatians’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Pinocchio’, ‘Mulan’ and ‘Dumbo’ are also in the works.
A reboot of ‘Beauty And The Beast’ starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the beast is also due for release in 2017.
‘The Lion King’ is one of the most successful films of all time, with a total box office gross of $968.8m (£745.8m).
It also won Academy Awards for the original song ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ and original score, as well as two Grammy Awards.
In 1997, the film was adapted into a stage show, which continues to run on Broadway and in the West End to this day.
